In Shakespeare's "Hamlet", Ophelia loses her mind after Hamlet accidentally kills her father. She sings bits of songs and says lines of poetry, one of which is "They say the owl was a baker's daughter." It's from an ancient fairy tale: A baker's daughter refuses to give bread to an old beggar woman, who is really a powerful fairy. Because the girl is so selfish, the fairy turns her into an owl.
